Why do we need pipeline registers?
A pipelined computer usually has “pipeline registers” after each stage. These store information from the instruction and calculations so that the logic gates of the next stage can do the next step. This arrangement lets the CPU complete an instruction on each clock cycle.
Why we use pipelining how pipelining relates with registers?
Pipelining aims at increasing throughput by cutting combinational depth into several separate stages of approximately uniform computational delays by inserting registers in between. The combinational logic between two subsequent pipeline registers is designed and optimized to compute one specific subfunction.
What is called a pipeline register?
A register pipeline is a set of registers that is allocated to the live ranges of array elements inside a loop. By preserving the computed array elements in the pipeline stages, reuse is enabled across loop iterations.
What are the names of pipeline registers?
We shall refer to the pipeline registers that are set between two stages with the names of the stages. So, we will have IF/ID, ID/EX, EX/MEM and MEM/WB registers. These registers must be large enough to contain all data moving from one phase to the following one (Patterson- Hennessy, fig.
What are the five pipeline stages?
A five-stage (five clock cycle) ARM state pipeline is used, consisting of Fetch, Decode, Execute, Memory, and Writeback stages.
When do you need to clear the pipeline Register?
When a stage is stalled, all previous stages must also be stalled, so that no subsequent instructions are lost. The pipeline register directly after the stalled stage must be cleared to prevent bogus information from propagating forward. Stalls degrade performance, so they should only be used when necessary.
How are results stored in pipeline Register in UNIPV?
•At the end of each clock cycle, the results of the operations in a stage are stored in a pipeline register that will be used as a source by the next stage in the next clock cycle. •These pipeline registers also buffer intermediate results to be used by non-adjacent stages of the pipeline (more details on this later) 10 Pipeline registers
How does pipeline Register affect performance and cost?
At each pipeline stage a performance penalty results from introducing a register delay treg which includes the delay caused by the storage element. Pipelining changes performance and cost figures as follows: Both performance and size grow monotonically with pipeline depth. The same holds true for latency.
How is a stall supported in the pipeline Register?
Stalls are supported by adding enable inputs ( EN) to the Fetch and Decode pipeline registers and a synchronous reset/clear ( CLR) input to the Execute pipeline register. When a lw stall occurs, StallD and StallF are asserted to force the Decode and Fetch stage pipeline registers to hold their old values.
