Why does a truck need dual alternators?
A dual independent power system approach prevents the vehicle from getting stuck due to draining too much power from the batteries but adds significant expense. The dual power system design works well with vehicles like RVs or police surveillance vehicles.
Can you run dual alternators?
By running dual alternators you can do just such a thing, and doing so leaves the factory charging system intact doing what it was intended to do, running the vehicle while the secondary alternator carries the additional accessory load.
What is a dual alternator system?
Dual alternators’ secondary function may be to replenish run down batteries after the vehicle has been sitting with accessories running. However, their primary purpose is to run a few constant high draw accessories or many low draw accessories at once while the engine is running and not drain the batteries.
How do you test a dual alternator?
Turn the engine OFF: Disconnect the regulator/control plug on one of the alternators (only do one of them at a time). Run the engine again (load on, same as above) and check system voltage again. Should still be 13.0 to 15.0 volts. Turn the engine off.
How do you test if you have a smart alternator?
Here’s how you determine if you have a smart alternator or not:
- Locate your main vehicle battery.
- Start the engine, ensuring any fans, radio, lights etc. are turned off.
- Take a voltage reading across the main vehicle battery.
- Leave running for around 5/10 minutes, then repeat step 3.
Is my alternator a smart alternator?
If your readings are around 14.4V DC, then you most likely have the traditional, non-smart alternator. If your reading is closer to 12.5-13.5V DC, or you know you have regenerative breaking, then it’s likely that you have a smart alternator, and will need an Orion or Sterling DC/DC charger alternator charger kit.
How are dual alternators used in a car?
Vehicle engineers can approach this from two separate design approaches. The first is to connect both alternators to a large battery bank shared among the starter, spark plugs and other vehicle systems.
Can you run two batteries on the same alternator?
You can run two batteries on the same alternator. Alternators protect against excessive current drain and aren’t affected by multiple batteries. When you connect the batteries, the voltage equalizes. This means that the lower voltage battery sucks power from the other.
How long does it take for a dual alternator to charge?
25-30 seconds until about 50 seconds 42A. Didn’t do the driverside glow plug current. Digital meter and my eyes aren’t fast enough to get more accurate. Charging after startup. lower alt—-0A for about 1 minute then 55-60A and upper alt went down from 110 to about 45-50A.
What kind of cable does an alternator use?
Some standard set-ups I see regularly that have been fitted by the so called professionals is where they use twin 6mm auto cable (really 4.59mm²), this is next to useless for fast, deep charging.
