Why does Chinook have two rotors?
The two rotors are linked by a transmission that ensures the rotors are synchronized and do not hit each other, even during an engine failure. Tandem rotor designs achieve yaw by applying opposite left and right cyclic to each rotor, effectively pulling both ends of the helicopter in opposite directions.
Do Chinook propellers spin in opposite directions?
Tandem-rotor helicopters such as the CH-47 Chinook also use a counter-rotating arrangement. Nonetheless, coaxial contra-rotating propellers and rotors are moderately common in military aircraft and naval applications, such as torpedoes, where the added maintenance cost is not a primary concern.
How does a helicopter move forward and backward?
The rotor blades are pitched lower in the front of the rotor assembly than behind it. This increases the angle of attack — and creates lift — at the back of the helicopter. The unbalanced lift causes the helicopter to tip forward and move in that direction.
How does a Chinook helicopter work?
Lift, in a Chinook helicopter, is produced by a rotor system consisting of two fully articulated counter-rotating rotors. The forward rotor is driven by the forward transmission through the rotor drive train. The aft rotor is driven by the aft transmission through a vertical drive shaft.
Can a civilian buy a Chinook?
Starting late last year, the U.S. Army began auctioning the Chinooks for civilian use. The auctions are the first time military Chinooks are being sold for non-military operations, and Summit Aviation customer CHI Aviation has bought three of the 12 auctioned so far.
Do counter-rotating propellers work?
The torque on the aircraft from a pair of contra-rotating propellers effectively cancels out. Contra-rotating propellers have been found to be between 6% and 16% more efficient than normal propellers.
How does the Chinook fly forward?
At a hover, when you push the left pedal, the Chinook turns around the center of the aircaft. When you push the left pedal and put in some left cyclic, the aircraft rotates around the aft rotorhead. When you push left pedal and add some right cyclic, the aircraft rotates around the forward head.
Why do helicopters take off backwards?
Helicopters take off backward to allow the pilot to keep the helipad in sight in case they need to re-land in an emergency. When taking off vertically, the helipad disappears out of sight around 30ft to 50ft up, backing up allows the pilot to keep the helipad in sight through the chin bubble window.
Can a Chinook carry a tank?
The Chinook is equipped with two T55-GA-714A turboshaft engines, which are pod-mounted on either side of the rear pylon under the rear rotor blades. The self-sealing fuel tanks are mounted in external fairings on the sides of the fuselage. Three additional fuel tanks can be carried in the cargo area.
How much does it cost to fly a Chinook?

What kind of helicopter is the Chinook helicopter?
The Chinook was originally designed by Vertol, which had begun work in 1957 on a new tandem-rotor helicopter, designated as the Vertol Model 107 or V-107. Around the same time, the United States Department of the Army announced its intention to replace the piston engine -powered Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave with a new,…
What kind of transmission does a CH-47 Chinook have?
The Forward and Aft Transmissionsof the CH-47D are similar in design and transmit torque from the Combining Transmission to their respective Rotary Wing Head. The torque is transmitted through a Spiral Bevel Ring Gear.
Which is the heaviest lifting helicopter in the world?
Boeing CH-47 Chinook. The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engined, tandem rotor, heavy-lift helicopter developed by American rotorcraft company Vertol and manufactured by Boeing Vertol (later known as Boeing Rotorcraft Systems). The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters.
When did the Chinook helicopter crash in Afghanistan?
On 6 August 2011, a Chinook crashed near Kabul, killing all of the 38 aboard. It was reportedly shot down with a rocket-propelled grenade by the Taliban while attempting to assist a group of U.S. Army Rangers.
