Why does low voltage draw more current?
Operating a motor at the outer limits of its voltage requirements reduces its efficiency and causes premature failure. The amount of power the motor draws has a rough correlation to the voltage 2current (amps). Thus, when voltage gets low, the current must increase to provide the same amount of power.
How do appliances draw current?
Electrical loads such as appliances have resistance. That, together with Voltage determines the current they draw (see Ohms Law). Above the rated current, the wires in your wall plug transformer overheat and burn (if a fuse is not present).
Does voltage matter for appliances?
Apart from short circuit case you need to have a voltage difference and complete path for current to flow. So voltage is necessary for any appliance to work.
Why does using the correct voltage in a circuit matter?
Voltage is just pressure and poses no danger. You need both high voltage and current to be dangerous. Since voltage is only a measurement of pressure, there needs to be enough electrons to flow to be dangerous. With enough pressure and flow (amps) an electrical circuit can become dangerous.
How many amps do household items use?
An amp is the amount of electrical current that flows through a circuit. In most homes, lighting and small appliance circuits are 15 or 20 amps, and major appliances are on 20, 50 or even 60 amp circuits.
Does higher wattage mean more powerful?
The higher the wattage, the brighter the light, but also the more power it uses. The efficiency of this system was introduced using incandescent lamps. For instance: 100 Watt incandescent lamp produces 1700 – 1800 lumens and uses 100 Watts of energy per hour.
Does higher voltage matter?
A higher voltage system is more efficient than a lower voltage since it experiences less energy loss from resistance given the same amount of power draw. You get the same exact voltage—but with 80 amps of current. That’s 80% more energy!
