Put the cursor to the right of the footer, and press the Tab key if necessary to get to the position where you want the page number. Then click the Page Number button and click Current Position before choosing the number. DO NOT choose Bottom of Page, because that will wipe out the existing footer.
Hover the mouse over the top or bottom edge of any page until Word displays the white space arrows. Then, double-click the edge and Word will hide the header (and footer) and the white space. In Word 2003, click the Display tab. Uncheck the Show White Space Between Pages in Page Layout View option.
How do I reset my footer?
Remove all headers and footers
- Go to Insert > Header or Footer, and then select Remove Header or Remove Footer.
- If your document has more than one section, repeat this process for each section.
Note: When you customize your header or footer, you can add images, page numbers, date, time, sheet name, file name and path, and more. For more on headers and footers, see Headers and footers in Word.
To add page numbers to an existing header or footer:
- Select the header or footer. The Design tab will appear.
- Place the insertion point where you want the page number to be.
- From the Design tab, select the Page Number command.
- Click Current Position, then select the desired style.
How do I insert a page number and Footer at the same time?
Use the Page field code to insert page numbers
- Double-click the header or the footer area (near the top or bottom of the page).
- Go to Header & Footer > Field.
- In the Field names list, Select Page, and then select OK.
- To change the numbering format, go to Header & Footer > Page Number > Format Page Numbers.
Only the Page Layout view, Print Preview, and printed pages show headers and footers. If you wish to insert headers or footers for many worksheets at once, you may utilise the Page Setup dialogue box. Click Page Layout under View on the Layout tab.
To allow this, you must disable the feature that repeats footers across sections.
- Double-click a footer that follows a section break. A tab labeled “Same as Previous” appears above its right side.
- Click “Design” in the Word ribbon.
- Click “Link to Previous” in the ribbon’s Navigation group to deselect it.
How do you get back into the Header or Footer?
Choose View > Header and Footer. Click the Switch Between Header and Footer button . Your cursor should be in the footer. Click the button again to toggle back to the Header.
