Why don t the sizes of my folders add up to the size of my hard drive in Windows?
You may be forgetting to check hidden files: make sure you have “show hidden files, folders and drives” enabled in Windows’ file explorer options. You may be forgetting to check system files: make sure you have “hide protected operating system files” disabled.
Which folders take up the most space?
For some items, you will need to visit the system generated folders e.g. games and apps. The folders are sorted by size so the ones at the top are the ones that are occupying the most space.

Use a tool like Tree Size Professional, as that will give you the truepicture of folders like System Volume Information. Also, don’t forget there’s probably a pagefile on there too. Page file is on another drive. This is D: drive which has all the Active Directory user profiles, etc on it.

Contents indexing takes up space: if you open the properties dialog for a partition, you can see the option “Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties”. This takes up space, I’m not quite sure where on the file system.
