Why is grub not installed on Linux Mint 19?
Recently I was installing Linux Mint 19 onto a computer and discovered that the installer consistently failed to setup GRUB correctly. This left the system in an unbootable state. Thankfully there was an easy work around!

Ensure that Secure Boot, Fast Boot, CSM in UEFI BIOS setup and Fast Startup in Win 10/8.1 are disabled and for the “Something else” install option, the “Device for boot loader installation” is the Windows EFI System Partition (= ESP = fat32/about 104MB) which is usually dev/sda1, or if unsuccessful select the whole disk, ie /sda. …….
Is it possible to run Linux Mint without installing it?
So if it boots correctly and gets to a Desktop, it is running live, without being installed. You can still install some new programs and save files, but everything is in RAM and any changes not written to a physical drive are lost on reboot.

Yes android offers to install grub, I tried but it doesn’t detect any linux distros and there is no update-grub. i will see about contacting android x86. i am marking this thread as solved now. Thanks for your help!

On an old laptop first I installed Mint 11 LXDE, than I decided to give win 7 a try, installed it afterwards and grub menu was gone. Then I tried with Mint live from usb to apt-get grub customizer, but I was without internet at the moment.
