To update the image in the viewport, the only solution I’ve found is to have a window open with the UV/Image Editor (this has to remain open the whole time), select your movie texture, press ‘n’ (or use the little plus sign at the right of the window) to get some more options.
Why are animated materials and textures so slow?
Animated materials and textures require shader re-compilation, and this is a computationally expensive and resource heavy task, that is generally preformed on the CPU rather than the graphics card). Recompiling requires constant re-upload and sending data back and forth from the CPU to the GPU which is comparatively slow.
Why do you need a viewport shader for animation?
Viewport shaders are optimized for speed and performance for smooth playback and as responsive interaction as possible during animations. Animated materials and textures require shader re-compilation, and this is a computationally expensive and resource heavy task, that is generally preformed on the CPU rather than the graphics card).
Why is video texture not refreshing in Blender?
A proper solution to this likely means moving ownership of the GPU texture from the image to the image user or depsgraph, or having some kind of caching system. Brecht Van Lommel (brecht) merged a task: T60644: Video texture does not work. Jan 19 2019, 11:04 AM
