My XQuartz pops up a window saying XQuartz quit unexpectedly which I can provide the Report for if it helps. Then in the terminal it says xauth: (argv):1: unable to open display “:0”.

Why is the display variable not set in xterm?
Specifically, the DISPLAY variable does not get set (output of echo $DISPLAY is just two blank lines). On the other hand, ifI just start XQuartz and open an xterm I have no problem, i.e., the DISPLAY variable is set normally.
