Why is Star Delta preferred with induction motor?
The motor draws high current and delivers very less torque at starting. To limit the starting current of an induction motor, the supply voltage needs to be reduced to reduce the voltage induced in the rotor circuit.
Which method is used to speed control of induction motor?
By Injecting EMF In Rotor Circuit Speed control of induction motor is done in this method by injecting a particular voltage in the rotor diagram. The injected voltage (emf) needs to have an equal frequency with the slip frequency. However, there is no limitation for the phase of that emf.
Why do we prefer star delta starter?
Working principle of star delta starter During starting the motor windings are connected in a star configuration and this reduces the voltage across each winding. This also reduces the torque by a factor of three. Star/Delta starters are probably the most common reduced voltage starters.
What happens if you connect a Star motor in Delta?
The Delta connection motor will draw 1.732 times higher current when connected into a star connection mode.
Which starting method is the best method in induction motor?
Starting of an Induction Motor
- Direct on-line starter. The direct on-line starter method, of an induction motor, is simple and economical.
- Star delta starter. The star delta starter method of starting three-phase induction motors is very common and widely used among all the methods.
- Autotransformer starter.
Is the rotor speed or torque change with Delta or star?
The input kVA is about the same for either connection to the proper voltage for that connection. The peak torque, rated torque, rated slip and other torque vs. speed parameters are the same for both connections. The speed of the motor does not change with delta or star connection.
How are star and delta connected motors different?
The speeds of Star connected motors are slow as they receive 1/√3 voltage. The speeds of Delta connected motors are high because each phase gets the total of line voltage. In Star Connection, the phase voltage is low as 1/√3 of the line voltage, so, it needs a low number of turns, hence, saving in copper.
What happens when you reduce the torque on an induction motor?
As said, the reduction of torque will cause the motor to increase slip slightly, so there might be a slight change in unloaded speed. With load, the loss of torque cancreate a much GREATER loss of speed and increase in slip, to the point of possibly stalling the motor, depending on the AMOUNT of load applied.
When to change connection between Delta and Star?
Normally changing between delta and star connection is used only for accommodating two possible supply voltages and for star-delta starting as a means of limiting the starting current by reducing the voltage for a few seconds while the motor is coming up to speed.
