Why is the direction of the grain important wood?
The grain of the wood is probably the most important part of the wood as it determines the strength and texture of the wood. The fibers are placed in a longitudinal direction and any piece of wood is easier to cut with the grain and the cut will be cleaner with fewer splinters.
What is continuous grain?
In this case, “continuous grain” means that the box sides consist of one board and the parts are assembled in order -allowing the grain pattern to wrap around the corners. There are two main reasons we choose to make our boxes (specifically, the mitered box sides) with continuous grain.
Which way does the grain go on fabric?
Fabric grain refers to the direction of the warp and weft threads used in weaving the fabric. Straight grain is in the direction of the warp threads, which run parallel to the selvages, and cross grain runs in the direction of the weft threads, which run perpendicular to the selvage edges.
Should you plane with the grain?
Do you plane with or against the grain? Always try to plain with the grain rather than against the grain. Planing against the grain can cause the wood to tear out. This is because when planed against the grain the blade lifts a chunk of the top wood fibers and separates it from the fibers below it.

Wood is strongest in the direction parallel to grain. Because of this, the strength and stiffness properties of wood structural panels are greater in the direction parallel to the strength axis than perpendicular to it (see Figure 1).

While the bowl turning grain orientation of an end-grain bowl is not common, it can work well for ornate more artistic turnings. End-grain turning also works well for hollow forms and deeper bowls that start to be more vase or vessel-like compared to a traditional bowl shape.

How is the grain direction of cardboard determined?
I will list five different ways to determine grain direction even while I prefer binding paper and cardboard to other methods: Paper and cardboard offer noticeably more resistance in one direction than the other. That resistance comes from grain springing. Grain direction goes along the curve of least resistance.
What happens if you have wrong grain direction of paper?
Glue may penetrate along the grain direction from the spine inside the book block. Book may not open properly if it is bound with wrong grain direction.
