Why Pillow shading is bad?
Pillow shading is when the shading crowds around the outline and the outlines only, making the area of color appear softened (sort of like a pillow). Sometimes the effect of pillow shading happens depending on where the light source is, but always leaning on it is a bad habit.

okay thanks for explaining. Pillow shading comes from a Photoshop filter where a certain layer/image will have a depth added from the center in/out and was centered. This filter is no longer in Photoshop but has evolved to one called bevel/emboss.

To start off, I would recommend 320×180, as it’s a good balance in size, and as a bonus it can fit the widest range of high resolutions. Let’s take a step back. What will factor in for your background size, are the characters, as the background should be in scale with them.
How are highlights and shadows formed in pixel art?
Notice where the sun is placed and where the highlights and shadows fall. The shapes of the highlight follow the shape or “form” of the object. Notice how the top of the cube has a very flat highlight, whereas the sphere has a curved highlight. Highlights happen on the sides where the light hits it the strongest.
Light is what lets us see the world and affects the way we see color. Color is the way objects emit light. In terms of pixel art I’m referring to the management of color and clusters in order to simulate shadow, highlight, and mid-tones.
Why does my pixel art look so flat?
Pixel art especially has a tendency to appear flat if light is not handled with care. Finding the right approach to light can be a delicate matter when working within low spec parameters. However, limitations can allow more flexibility in terms of abstraction, and subtle details go a long way.
