Why PWM is used in SMPS?
The on and off of the switch is controlled by PWM that generated by PIC microcontroller 16F877A. The on and off of the switch is important because the duty cycles of the PWM is used to regulate the DC output voltage. So the desire output voltage can be produced by generate various duty cycle.
Why PWM is preferred?
PWM represents the most commonly employed voltage control method. An advantage of PWM control is that because the frequency is fixed, any switching noise that arises can be predicted, thus facilitating the filtering process.
What is PWM switching?
Use of PWM as a switching technique Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is a commonly used technique for generally controlling DC power to an electrical device, made practical by modern electronic power switches. If the On period of the switch is longer compared to its off period, the load receives comparatively higher power.
What is the difference between PWM and PFM?
Unlike PWM, in which the width of square pulses is varied at constant frequency, PFM fixes the width of square pulses while varying the frequency. In other words, the frequency of the pulse train is varied in accordance with the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating signal at sampling intervals.
What are the advantages of PWM?
The main advantage of PWM is that power loss in the switching devices is very low. When a switch is off there is practically no current, and when it is on and power is being transferred to the load, there is almost no voltage drop across the switch.
How does PWM control voltage?
Driving a cooling fan motor with PWM causes the motor to respond to the average of the pulses. In this way, PWM mimics the linear control obtained through varying a voltage that changes over time. The average voltage equals duty cycle multiplied by the maximum voltage applied to the motor.
What is meant by frequency modulation?
Frequency Modulation (FM) is the encoding of information in a carrier wave by changing the instantaneous frequency of the wave. FM technology is widely used in the fields of computing, telecommunications, and signal processing.
What is SMPS and how it works?
SMPS circuit is operated by switching and hence the voltages vary continuously. The switching device is operated in saturation or cut off mode. The efficiency of SMPS is high because, instead of dissipating excess power as heat, it continuously switches its input to control the output.
What is SMPS and its uses?
Like other power supplies, an SMPS transfers power from a DC or AC source (often mains power, see AC adapter) to DC loads, such as a personal computer, while converting voltage and current characteristics. This higher power conversion efficiency is an important advantage of a switched-mode power supply.
What happens if the PWM is too low?
Most controllers have a minimum PWM on-time that can be achieved – if the plant tries to command a duty cycle lower than this minimum, you may see erratic output, missing pulses, high ripple current, etc. – some converters will simply stop regulating (the output will rise).
Where are the power supply tracks on a SMPS?
All configurations have some additional circuit to allow the controller to start at power-up. Structure of a SMPS. There is always a very clear separation between the high and low voltage sides (primary and secondary sides). You can observe it on the bottom (copper) side of the PCB as a larger spacing in the tracks.
What’s the minimum load for a switched mode power supply?
The output specifications section seems to state that, for the 3.3V output (V1), 3A is the minimum load while 30A is the maximum. I know that running a switched mode power supply without a load can produce inaccurate output voltages and even damage the system, although I don’t understand exactly why this is the case.
What happens if there is no output on a SMP?
No output, good fuse SMPS can fail in many different ways, the most common being no output power at all. In this case, I start by checking the input fuse. If the fuse is good but there is no output, probably all the semiconductors are good and it could be easy to fix.
