Why the fault currents are more than normal current?
Fault currents are caused by very low impedance short circuits. These may be shorts to ground or across phases. The resulting high current flow can result in overheating of equipment and conductors, excesses forces, and at times even serious arcs, blasts, and explosions.
How do you test prospective fault current?
The Prospective Short Circuit Current test sequence:
- Use Prospective Fault Current tester or select the PFC function of a multifunctional tester such as the Megger 1553, and make sure that the supply is ON, but the Main Switch is in OFF position.
- Press TEST and make a note of the value (kA).
Where is the highest value of PFC in an installation?
The PFC will continuously be the highest at the source of the installation as the impedance/resistance is always the lowest there. So as a regulation, if it’s not too extreme at the mains it will be fine everywhere else.
Why is prospective fault current important?
A PFC test calculates the current that will flow in the event of an earth fault; i.e., Line to Earth. It is important that we conduct the tests to make sure that the protective devices installed within a circuit are rated at the correct breaking capacity.
What is Max fault current?
For single phase circuits, the maximum fault current is between the phase and the neutral and in three phase circuits it is when all phases are shorted (symmetrical current). The total impedance is that with operating temperature 20οC (lower temperature means lower resistance).
Why is a multimeter not able to measure AC current?
As an analogue multimeter does not contain any active electronics, the diode rectifier used to rectify the alternating waveform has a certain turn on voltage and this will affect the low voltage end of some scales. Some meters may not be able to measure AC current, or they will have very restricted ranges.
Why do you need to measure the current in a circuit?
However current measurements often need to be made to find out whether a circuit is operating correctly, or to discover other facts associated with its current consumption. Current is one of the basic electrical / electronic parameters, and therefore it is often necessary to measure the current flowing in the ciricuit to check its operation.
What kind of sensor is used to measure current?
There are several different types of sensor / meter that can be used this current measurement technique. Current transformer: One of the most common forms of current sensor is referred to as a current clamp. Hall effect sensor: The Hall Effect sensor using a different technology.
How to calculate the fault current of a switchboard?
Fault Current Calculation Example Main Switchboard SCCR=200kA Isc = 8,562 A Isc = 54,688 A HVAC RTU1 SCCR = 5kA Isc = 42,575 A Isc = 50,000 A Marking Required per NEC 110.24 Fault current at RTU1 > SCCR of RTU1 CODE VIOLATION!
