Why would you use typedefs?
The typedef keyword allows the programmer to create new names for types such as int or, more commonly in C++, templated types–it literally stands for “type definition”. Typedefs can be used both to provide more clarity to your code and to make it easier to make changes to the underlying data types that you use.
Should structs be typedef?
mystruct myvar; If you use the typedef you don’t need the struct prefix anymore. In C, the type specifier keywords of structures, unions and enumerations are mandatory, ie you always have to prefix the type’s name (its tag) with struct , union or enum when referring to the type.
Is typedef needed in C++?
typedef is necessary for many template metaprogramming tasks — whenever a class is treated as a “compile-time type function”, a typedef is used as a “compile-time type value” to obtain the resulting type.
Is typedef a declaration?
A typedef declaration is a declaration with typedef as the storage class. A typedef declaration is interpreted in the same way as a variable or function declaration, but the identifier, instead of assuming the type specified by the declaration, becomes a synonym for the type.
Why do we use typedefs for structs in Java?
Using typedef’d structs really made those violations obvious. Portability was a concern as we wrote for a half-dozen platforms with the server and quite a few more with the client. typedef ‘s main usege is to reduce the number of keystrokes required to write code and to enhance readability.
Why do we need typedefs for Foo struct?
With such a definition, not using typedefs, it is possible for a compiland unit to include foo.h to get at the FOO_DEF definition. If it doesn’t attempt to dereference the ‘bar’ member of the foo struct then there will be no need to include the “bar.h” file.
Why should we typedef A struct so often in C?
In C++, with the typedef the name hiding become an error that the compiler tells you about rather than a hidden source of potential problems. Using a typedef avoids having to write struct every time you declare a variable of that type: One other good reason to always typedef enums and structs results from this problem:
Can a struct be both a variable and a type?
A program cannot use S as the name of both a type and a variable (or function or enumeration constant): This is good. The tag name in a struct, union, or enum definition is optional. Many programmers fold the struct definition into the typedef and dispense with the tag altogether, as in:
