What is paper based prototyping?
Paper prototyping is a process where design teams create paper representations of digital products to help them realize concepts and test designs. They draw sketches or adapt printed materials and use these low-fidelity screenshot samples to cheaply guide their designs and study users’ reactions from early in projects.
How do you make a paper prototype?
How to Paper Prototype
- Use printer paper and cheap pencils/pens. The form affects your creative freedom.
- Start by loosening up. Maybe you need to take a sheet of paper and scribble all over it.
- Prototype mobile-first.
- One sketch per screen.
- Iterate as the ideas happen.
- Gather everything you need beforehand.
Why it is important to test the product prototype?
Testing a prototype / developed design is a very important part of the design and manufacturing process. Testing and evaluation, simply confirms that the product will work as it is supposed to, or if it needs refinement. In general, testing a prototype allows the designer and client to assess the viability of a design.
How to test paper prototypes with your users?
Alternatively, you can use a simple prototyping tool to create a more realistic experience for your users to click through (we recently used Atomic, and it was very easy to set up!). Remote user tests are harder to execute than in-person tests, and careful preparation is key. Technical difficulties can often interfere with getting quality insights.
Why is it difficult to test a prototype?
Testing at volume is also difficult with prototypes because you would need to recruit large amounts of users to send the prototype link to and this can be a major obstacle. Prototype testing is about gathering actionable feedback fast, not collecting as much feedback as you can.
How is prototyping used in usability testing?
Typical use cases are then created and the users are requested to try and perform them by interacting with the prototype. Based on where they press or select, the human computer will change or alter the prototype by introducing whole screens or snippets, depending on how the system is intended to react.
Are there any drawbacks to paper prototyping?
With its drawbacks in mind, you can understand paper prototypes’ limitations in testing high-fidelity graphics, usability, and gut reactions. Even elements like navigation and information architecture seem out of bounds. That said, paper prototyping is perfect for early stage conceptualizing.
