What is a census summary?
Census data is presented in Summary Files (SF). It presents detailed population and housing data (such as place of birth, education, employment status, income, value of housing unit). SF4 (Summary File 4) This is a 1-in 6 sample of the population, down to the Census tract level (less resolution than SF1, SF2 and SF3).
What are summary files?
The American Community Survey (ACS) Summary File is a set of comma-delimited text files that contain all of the Detailed Tables for the ACS data releases. That information is located in other files that the user must merge with the data files to reproduce full tables.
How is census data broken down?
In Census data the nation is broken down into ever smaller geographic units: States are subdivided into Counties which are further divided into Tracts which are broken into Block Groups which are made up of Blocks. The two main data files that get used the most are Summary File 1 and Summary File 3.
